NEC staff volunteers organise drawing competition for children of underprivileged families at The Esplanade
Date: 10 September 2003
Venue: The Esplanade, Singapore
In support of President's Challenge 2003: Volunteer A Day, Volunteer With Kindness, NEC's 4 subsidiaries organised a drawing competition for 35 children from Hougang Sheng Hong Family Service Centre.
Mr Takehiko Kato, NEC BCCS, Ms Christophane Foo, NEC SAP, and Ms Lee Shir Ee, Esplanade, judged the drawing submitted by the children.
15 staff volunteers took care of the children during the drawing competition, after which all were given a guided tour of The Esplanade and subsequently treated to a nutritious lunch. Mr Takehiko Kato, NEC BCCS, and Ms Jaclyn Lee, NEC SAP, were there to present prizes to the winners of the competition, who were 1st prize: Tan Hui Ying (8 year-old) , 2nd prize: Siti Hasnah (13 year-old), 3rd prize: Liew Ziyuan (9 year-old). Social contribution department of NEC Corporation funded the event under the overseas joint program scheme.
Every child was given a gift sponsored by NEC, comprising a bag of drawing materials.
"This trip has provided us with yet another opportunity to make a difference in our work schedule. The happy faces on each kid and the interesting comments and views that each kid provides, serve to remind us that there are still so many ways that we can look at things. Maybe we should all take a step back and look at things from their simple and direct perspective. We always take things for granted both in work and in life.
Through these kids, I have learnt that happiness is not in the things that we have but in appreciating what we have already," said Mr Linus Lim, a volunteer from NEC Semiconductors Singapore.
